Lancaster-city What you really need to know about Lancaster is that, aside
from being one of America's most historically rich cities, it presents
a huge array of things to see and do. With a population of 56,000 and
a surrounding metropolitan area of 470,000, Lancaster is an ideal college
town-big enough to have a little bit of everything, and small enough
so that you don't have to wait too long for it.
Arts and culture. Lancaster presents a robust selection of historical, artistic,
and cultural outlets. Some of these include the Central Market, the
North Museum of Natural History & Science, At the Fulton, the Rockford
Plantation and Museum, James Buchanan's Wheatland, Demuth Foundation
& Gardens, Lancaster Cultural History Museum, Lancaster Museum of
Art, and over 200 shopping outlet stores.
F&M favorites. Students looking to blow off some steam away from campus choose
from a variety of live music and entertainment venues, as well as novelty
"hotspots" in downtown alone. Many social hot-spots cater to both under-
and over-21 crowds. Some of these clubs include Hildy's, Brendee's,
Legal Bagel, Starbucks, The Village, The Blue Star, Park City, Stan's
Records, and the Market. And, Lancaster's acclaimed club, The Chameleon,
brings in some of the country's hottest musicians.

Food and drink. Variety is the spice of life, and in Lancaster that means choosing
from pretty much any type of cuisine you can think of. You'll find trusty
chains like Fuddruckers, family-style Pennsylvania Dutch smorgasbord,
Japanese, Thai, Indian, Italian, Meditteranean, Tex-Mex, French, Cajun,
and Middle Eastern cuisine.
You can get there from here. Don't let the rolling countryside that surrounds Lancaster
fool you. We are within just a few hours of several major East Coast
cities and all of the cultural, professional, and recreational outlets
they provide. Students often take weekend trips to New York, Baltimore,
Washington, D.C., or Philadelphia, either as an adventure among friends
or with a class or club. In fact, our "Fumbus" will make it even more
convenient for you, with free transportation to special events.
Of course, the
only way to really experience F&M is to visit. But, since we’re
fairly certain you’re not here now, the next best thing is by taking
advantage of our virtual tour and visit planner. You’ve probably
seen these before, but ours is as cool as they come.
