You're not a goldfish. So, it's safe to assume that you don't want to go to college
in a fish bowl. Most of our students don't. In fact, over 50 percent
of our students seek out ways to apply their knowledge and skills in
ways meant to serve the greater good of the Lancaster community.
As a student at F&M, you will realize that it doesn't
take a college degree to make a difference. It simply takes a little
bit of know-how and a lot of heart. Here's a cross-section of just some
of the local agencies where F&M students donate their time and talent:
School District of Lancaster
Boys & Girls Clubs of America
Milagro House
SouthEast Lancaster Health Services
Big Brothers Big Sisters
Spanish American Civic Association
Lancaster Generations Adult Day Care
The Ware Institute for Civic Engagement The Ware Institute for Civic Engagement is devoted
to instilling a sense of leadership among our students. The Institute
offers key programs designed to show students the impact of good leadership
on community organizations and allows students to get involved in service
activities in the local, national, and international communities. Most
student service projects are self-initiated, while many others are started
through invitations from local agencies.
The Public Service Summer Internship Program The Public Service Summer Internship Program was created in
response to an institutional belief: that a liberal education is a civic
mission and the community, nation, and world are its laboratory. This
10-week summer program places students in full-time internships in Lancaster
County in such areas as human services, city and county government,
law and justice, education, health care, economic development, and the
arts. Under the supervision of carefully selected mentors, and with
one day a week spent on campus with academic and administrative supervisors,
interns learn invaluable leadership and work skills.
Putting it Together in the Community (PIT) Putting it Together in the Community is a program that gives incoming first-year students the opportunity to perform service in the Lancaster community before orientation. Participants may participate in various workshops, including Habitat for Humanity, Let's Get Ready for School, Friends for Life, and Clean Air, Clean Water.
Of course, the
only way to really experience F&M is to visit. But, since we’re
fairly certain you’re not here now, the next best thing is by taking
advantage of our virtual tour and visit planner. You’ve probably
seen these before, but ours is as cool as they come.
